Hospital Pays $400,000 HIPAA Breach but Hillary only get’s slap on the wrist.

Hospital being investigated

During an investigation of the parent company of a hospital it was discovered that Business Agreements with it’s vendors were not up to date. The parent was being investigated for the loss of unencrypted backups tapes of patient information.  This company and the hospital are being fined for all sorts of mishandling of data and even simple forms that were not updated. But when it is discovered that one of our Federal Officials mishandles data and makes things disappear that all the got was a slap on the writs. Shame on the government for asking for such stiff fines against this hospital when it won’t even charge their own for the same type of data risks.  Are our politicians that high above the law that the rules they pass are not good enough for them to be held accountable against.  Enjoy the reading in the following link, it show how expensive violations of the law can cost a company. Also take this as a warning to individuals doing work that falls under HIPAA make sure you do your Business Associates agreements with the facility even if they never ask you for it. Remember ignorance of the law does not make you innocent, Stay a head of your client or as a politician and 1st lady said make sure you take the High Road.

The federal investigation stemmed from the loss of unencrypted backup tapes containing patient data, which were maintained by the hospital’s parent company… A Rhode Island hospital agreed this month to pay $550,000 in settlements after failing to properly update business associate agreements as required under the privacy and security rules of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), federal authorities said. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Civil Rights (OCR) opened an investigation into Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island (WIH) after receiving a report of a data breach in November 2012.
